Officially completed in 1932, the Santisimo Rosario Parish or the University of Santo Tomas Chapel is among one of the earliest edifices of the university. The Chapel has become the venue for various university religious activities which include the annual Misa de Apertura, a decades-old tradition of officially opening the academic year with a Mass of the Holy Spirit and the delivery of the academic lecture called the Discurso de Apertura; the annual novena to Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary for the La Naval celebration; and the Heritage Christmas Concert. It was hosted the image of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila, which was saved from the bombings that destroyed the Old Santo Domingo Church in Intramuros
San Sebastian Church is the only neo-Gothic church in Asia made entirely of prefabricated steel. The steel structure was crafted in Belgium and was transported in eight different shipments to the Philippines. In 1891, the church was assembled and completed, its steel frame filled with mixed sand, gravel, and cement. Inside, the church is elaborate with stained glass windows depicting the passion of the Christ. The church's pointed arches and washed out paintings of nuns, angels, and saints evoke feelings of terror and fright. Quirky to its design, however, is its altar, which is made of seashells.
The University of Santo Tomas is the oldest existing university in Asia and is the largest (based on its student population) Catholic university in the world on a single campus. The university was founded by Bishop Miguel de Benavides on April 28, 1611, inside Intramuros. Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario was the first given name of the university and was established to be a seminary-college or a place to train young men for their priesthood. The name was later changed to Colegio de Santo Tomas, in memory of the foremost Dominican Theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas. In 1927, the university moved from Intramuros to its current campus in the Sampaloc district.
